I have read many books and tried to take pictures in different times. The results surely show completely different. In this article I will explain what I know in a simple way for beginner photographers to understand and feel confident in learning to take beautiful pictures.
To get a good quality of the picture it is not solely depend on the capability of the camera but also the capability of the photographer and the materials. You own an expensive professional camera but you don’t know how to use it. It means that you don’t know how it worth. I Just want to remind in previous articles, you are introduced to read the main three pillar of photography (ISO, Aperture and Shutter Speed). These three functions are very important and need to adjust every time.
Dare to step from a beginner to be a professional photographer, you have to know when is the best time of day to shoot then you will need to adjust the said camera functions that fit to the atmosphere in order to capture the best shoots.
Indoor and outdoor photos are the general common locations for taking pictures. Generally, photographer care more about the best hours for taking picture for outdoor shooting because it depends on the sunlight resources.
Whenever is the best time for inside studio shooting because the artificial studio lighting will always help making your photos look perfect. But in case you want to take a picture inside your room, inside office, hotels, restaurants, shops and so on. You have to care about the sunlight resources.
When you look at the photo and you see your skin tones look fantastic, surely you will be more than happy to take it again. People like their skin to be golden and that is possible in the photography. Photographer agree that the Golden Hour is the best time for outdoor shooting among blue hour and twilight. Golden hour makes your photo magical. It is soft, warm, dimensional, and just flat-out magical. Shooting during one of the golden hours adds color, texture, and depth to your scene. It adds a quality to images that can’t be replicated no matter how many actions, filters, or textures you use.
Some photographers call the Golden Hour the “Magical Hour”. Why it is called as a magical hour? Because the photos taken during the golden hour are truly a magical as the red and orange color fill the scene, sun is low in the sky.
- Sunrise: the golden hour is roughly the first hour of light after the sunrise.
- Sunset: the golden hour happens at the last hour of light before the sunset.
The exact duration varies between seasons. The sun being lower in the sky adds more dimension to the scene, because shadows are softer and light warmer. It’s pretty magical. The engagement and wedding photos are awesome at the golden hour, facilitating perfect rim light on the bride’s veil, or light on the wedding party. That will create you the best memory ever on your special occasion in life.
Blue Hour is the interval between the golden hour and the night hour in the evening when the sky has a deep blue with a cold color temperature and in the morning, it happened at the end of the morning after the golden hour. During the blue hour a gradient of color, from blue to orange, can be seen in the sky.
- Sunrise: blue hour starts around 30 minutes before the sunrise. It happens about 10 minutes
- Sunset: blue hour roughly starts about 10 to 15 minutes after the sun has set.
Between these magical color, be ready with your camera adjustment and shoot. What I am saying here are telling you the best times for photography. However, photographer still could take pictures besides the golden and blue hours. The thing is that you need to understand and adjust correctly the three pillars of photography (ISO, Aperture and Shutter Speed) and plus color temperature (K) or keep it as Auto White Balance (AWB). I will write about how to use color K in the next article.
I hope this article will at least give some ideas to those who want to understand about the best time in photographing. I like taking picture and I will try the best I can to share what I know. Feel free to share and ask in the comments section for improving our photography together.
